During her official programme at Suri in Birbhum district chief minister Mamata Banerjee has announced setting up of three new medical colleges in the state yesterday, which has brought joy amongst the MBBS aspirants in West Bengal.

The three new medical colleges in the state will be Tamralipta Government Medical College in Tamluk of East Midnapore, Prafulla Chandra Sen Government Medical College in Arambagh in Hooghly district and the third will be at Barasat in North 24-Parganas named Barasat Government Medical College.

The chief minister said that not only the MBBS aspirants of these three districts can study medical courses at these colleges but the students staying in surrounding districts will also get the benefit of studying at a government medical college near their home town.

At present, there are 30 medical colleges in the state, with the addition of these three medical colleges the total number of medical colleges in West Bengal will increase to 33 and the number on intake of MBBS seats will also increase.

Mamata Banerjee said that in less than thirteen years of her government, the state has seen establishments of so many medical colleges, universities, super speciality hospitals in the state, which the Left Front could not do in their 34 years rule.

In Shibpur Mouza of Bolpur, the CM has inaugurated the Biswa Bangla University, her dream project on 20 acres of sprawling campus at cost of Rs 600 crore.

The industrial land acquired during the left front period was lying vacant, the CM has set up a varsity and a township in that unused land.

The students of Birbhum, Murshidabad and East and West Burdwan will benefit from the Biswa Bangla University, the CM added.

Education minister Bratya Basu was also present at the programme.

The announcement of the new medical colleges in the state is a masterstroke by CM Mamata Banerjee before the crucial Lok Sabha polls, feel analysts.
